MLB 2026 Playoff Update (9/21/2026

We are now in the final week of the regular season and there's been more movement in the standings in just the last few days then there has been the rest of the month. We'll break down what's coming up as teams reach the 162 games played mark. We'll have one final update on Friday as teams play their final series of the regular season.

AL EAST

1. X- Tampa Bay (95-60) -- GB

2. X- New York (89-66) 6 GB

With Aaron Judge back on the IL the Yankees have slipped out of the division race, never giving Tampa Bay a true scare during the final month of the regular season. The two teams play a four game series starting tomorrow, and if the Rays win any of those four games, they will become division champions and the #1 seed on the American League side of the bracket.

AL CENTRAL

1. Cleveland (81-75) -- GB

2. Chicago (80-76) 1 GB

Cleveland's five game winning streak is the reason why they are still holding on to a one game lead in an attempt to win another division crown. It's important to remember that Chicago does own the tiebreaker over the Guardians so Cleveland will need to at least match the results the White Sox put up this week, or else Cleveland will be the one heading to the AL West champion in the wild card round.

AL WEST

1. Texas (78-78) -- GB

2. Houston (77-79) 1 GB

And Texas has now retaken the lead in the weakest division of all-time. Houston has continued to play poorly while the Rangers are at least playing respectable enough to stay near .500 and take the lead heading into the final week of the season. Houston owns this tiebreaker over Texas though so they are in the same spot as Cleveland over in the Central, match whatever the Astros do in the final week of the season and the division that nobody wanted to win is yours.

AL FIRST ROUND BYES

1. X-Tampa Bay (95-60) 14.5 GA

2. Cleveland (81-75) -- GB

3. Texas (78-78) 3 GB

Cleveland, and to an extent Chicago, have done enough to pull away from Texas and Houston to ensure that whoever wins the AL Central will be winning the second bye to the ALDS.

AL WILD CARD

WC1. X- New York (89-66) 9.5 GA

WC2. X- Boston (84-72) 4 GA

WC3. Chicago (80-76) -- GB

Toronto (77-79) 3 GB

Houston (77-79) 3 GB

Toronto has been able to get up to .500 several times this year, but never above it, and time has run out on them to steal a playoff spot. Baltimore has fallen fully out of the picture thanks to getting swept by the best team in baseball in Milwaukee and Houston's path to the playoffs still rest in the AL West. This is Chicago's, or Cleveland's, wild card to lose.

NL EAST

1. Y- Atlanta (92-64) -- GB

Atlanta clinched the NL East on Sunday with a win over Houston, their first division crown since 2023, but it is their 7th out of the last 9 years, an attest to how well the Braves have been run over the last decade.

NL CENTRAL

1. Y- Milwaukee (98-58) -- GB

Milwaukee has now clinched the best season in franchise history with their victory on Sunday over Baltimore. If Milwaukee can just manage a 2-4 final week, they will get to 100 wins for the first time and very likely home field for the entire playoffs, holding off Los Angeles.

NL WEST

1. Y- Los Angeles (96-60) -- GB

Five straight division titles and 13 out of the last 14. That one NL West title they didn't win? It took a special 108 win San Francisco Giants team to beat the 107 win Dodgers back in 2021. This is truly one of the most dominate runs in modern baseball.

NL FIRST ROUND BYES

1. Y- Milwaukee (98-58) 2 GA

2. Y- Los Angeles (96-60) -- GA

3. Y- Atlanta (92-64) 4 GB

Milwaukee is just one win or one Atlanta loss from clinching another first round bye. while the Dodgers should get the job done before the next and final update here on Friday. Atlanta is now suddenly staring at playing their division rival, Philadelphia in the wild card round.

NL WILD CARD

WC1. Chicago (87-69) 1 GA

WC2. San Diego (87-69) 1 GA

WC3. Philadelphia (86-70) -- GB

Arizona (82-74) 4 GB

Arizona is hanging on for dear life but barring a collapse from Philadelphia, the Diamondbacks will not be in the playoff field again for the third consecutive season. Thanks to San Diego's surge, we are looking at another San Diego vs. Chicago wild card matchup while Philadelphia currently slots in to play Atlanta. The placement of these three teams will absolutely come down to the final day of the season.
