MLB 2026 Playoff Update (9/1/2026)

MLB 2026 Playoff Update (9/1/2026)

As Major League Baseball prepares for the final push for playoff positioning, I'll be previewing EVERY single playoff battle and updating it frequently throughout the month.

I'll be giving a "watchability" score out of 10, just to give you, the readers, a rough idea of what to pay close attention to as we leave the dog days of summer and begin to enter the brisk fall season.

AL EAST

  1. Tampa Bay (82-55) -- GB

  2. New York (78-60) 4.5 GB

  3. Boston (75-63) 7.5 GB

The AL East featured a battle between Tampa and New York for most of the season before the Rays were able to get a little breathing room thanks to the Yankees cooling off due to injuries. Boston's surge has them on the fringes of the division but likely too far behind Tampa to get the #1 seed in the AL. These are the three best teams in baseball and if Tampa does hold on to the division, New York and Boston will play against each other in the wild card series, unless something crazy happens.

Watchability: 6/10 The actual fight in this division isn't the best, it is the 3rd largest division lead as of today, but any battle involving the Red Sox and Yankees, makes this a potential battle to watch, albeit more for the wild card round and who will be hosting the best-of-three series, more on that later.

AL CENTRAL

  1. Chicago (72-65) -- GB

  2. Cleveland (69-68) 3 GB

  3. Minnesota (66-72) 6.5 GB

The winner of this division, likely gets the 2nd bye to the ALDS, on a very sad 85 win pace, behind the previously stated 3 AL East teams. The winner of this division does get an incredibly easy path to the ALCS. Chicago has led for most of the season, but hasn't been able to put Cleveland away, leaving this as a major swing battle. Win the division, get to the ALDS directly. Lose the division, likely miss the playoffs.

Watchability 6.5/10. The rating is only this high because it does have a direct impact on the ALDS, and if the AL East winner stumbles in the same round, then the AL Central champion will be the one with home field ,barring a stunning turnaround from the AL West champion.

AL WEST

  1. Houston (70-68) -- GB

  2. Texas (68-70) 2 GB

  3. Seattle (64-74) 6 GB

This entire division sucks. Seattle has been the biggest disappointment this year, Texas and Houston have both been barely at .500 all season long and it's not crazy to think the entire division can end up with a losing record (and somehow get to host a wild-card series).

Watchability: 2/10 The only reason this isn't a 1? Because it's actually the smallest division lead in all of baseball. The winner gets to host a wild-card series, although it's incredibly likely the team they face could have a better record than them. A weak side of the bracket could offer a glimmer of hope for some postseason magic, but none of these teams instill confidence in that thought.

AL FIRST ROUND BYES

  1. Tampa Bay (82-55) 10 GA

  2. Chicago (72-65) -- GB

  3. Houston (70-68) 2.5 GB

Tampa or whoever wins the AL East will be the #1 seed, there is no doubt about that. But if Chicago, or even Cleveland, can't play better, there is a slight chance that Houston does get the second bye. The lack of depth in the AL is showing big time and this race just shows how weak the league has been this year.

Watchability: 2/10. The hope for either of these potential champions is the fact they're dodging the entire AL East until the ALCS. A sudden hot streak could give them home field through the penultimate round. However, if any AL Central or AL West team does somehow get to the Fall Classic, they will not have home field against any NL team at the moment.

AL WILD CARD

WC1. New York (78-60) 8.5 GA

WC2. Boston (75-63) 5.5 GA

WC3. Cleveland (69-68) -- GB

Baltimore (69-69) 0.5 GB

Texas (68-70) 1.5 GB

Toronto (68-70) 1.5 GB

Minnesota (66-72) 3.5 GB

Seattle (64-74) 5.5 GB

Detroit (63-74) 6 GB

Kansas City (62-76) 7.5 GB

This is a really weak wildcard race, outside of the number of teams still in the picture. The first two wild cards are pretty much New York's and Boston's in some order, but the final spot is a battle realistically between 4 teams, with a few others lurking. A great September by any of these teams could be enough to push them into the AL Playoffs as the final team.

Watchability: 3/10. The only reason this has any entertainment value is due to the number of teams still realistically in the picture. The weak bracket previously mentioned, could again leave the door open to a run but could also lead to a quick exit in any round once the competition gets better.

NL EAST

  1. Atlanta (82-56) -- GB

  2. Philadelphia (78-60) 4 GB

This is the only division battle left remaining in the NL. Atlanta has lead from the very start, but a slight swoon following Philadelphia's surge, 69-41 since they fired Rob Thompson, has kept the division slightly competitive. The winner could end up anywhere from the #1 seed or even the #3 seed stuck in the wild card round. Unlike the AL, a wild card series screams major upset opportunities.

Watchability: 8/10 If Philadelphia can win 5 out of the remaining 7 matchups against Atlanta, the division race heats up majorly. Anything less probably gives Atlanta the division and Philadelphia would simply try to make sure their wild card round is at Citizens Bank Park and not Wrigley Field.

NL CENTRAL

  1. Milwaukee (85-53) -- GB

  2. Chicago (78-60) 7 GB

Chicago had the lead early, but a slight dip in performance allowed Milwaukee to take the lead, which they haven't let go and have only become the best team in baseball, shame on me for thinking they were going to be a middling .500 team this year and wouldn't even make the playoffs.

Watchability: 1.5/10. The division is pretty much over because Milwaukee isn't likely to collapse, but Chicago could make it really fun if they can keep playing well, or simply just keep hitting home runs. Chicago will try to do what they can to win the first wild card and host the series, instead of going to a hostile environment like Philadelphia, or even San Diego.

NL WEST

  1. Los Angeles (82-55)

This division has been over from nearly the start, with San Diego and Arizona both having slow starts. Even with the Dodgers stumbling slightly over the last month, the NL West Champion will be the Dodgers for the 13th time in the last 14 years.

Watchability: 0.5/10. It would take a miracle for the Dodgers to not be NL West Champions once again.

NL FIRST ROUND BYES

  1. Milwaukee (85-52) 3 GA

  2. Atlanta (82-55) -- GA

  3. Los Angeles (82-55) -- GB

The worst of the three division champions will have a brutal first round match up (likely San Diego or Arizona) and then gets an even tougher NLDS matchup against a rested team with a similar record. The Dodgers lost the tiebreaker to the Braves and Brewers, so at the moment it appears the Dodgers path to a third consecutive title will start in the wild card round once again.

Watchability 10/10. Three juggernauts going for a critical bye, and even more importantly, the 1 seed dodges the other two until the NLCS, even though a NLDS matchup against Chicago or Philadelphia should still be a nerve-wrecking best-of-5 series.

NL WILD CARD

WC1. Chicago (78-60) 5 GA

WC2. Philadelphia (78-60) 5 GA

WC3. San Diego (73-65) -- GB

Arizona (73-66) 0.5 GB

Miami (69-69) 4 GB

There are a lot less teams in the running for the 3 wild cards than for the junior circuit. Chicago and Philadelphia are in excellent spots to get the first two spots and a date in the wild card against each other. NL West rivals San Diego and Arizona are the battling for the final spot with both teams doing enough to get above .500 and create separation from the rest of the NL.

Watchability: 11/10. Chicago and Philadelphia will be battling for home field in their potential wild card series the entire way down the stretch, two teams that hoped to be division champions back in spring training are instead likely heading towards the best matchup of the wild card round. San Diego and Arizona will end the season with a 3 game series in San Diego, meaning this could also go to the final day, and yes the season series is currently tied 5-5 so that will also be decided in that final series. These two pairs feature the tightest battles in all of baseball, so buckle up because this will be absolute cinema.
